Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins the moment you step off the plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our driver will be waiting with a warm smile and a sign bearing your name. From there, it's a scenic one-hour drive to your lodge, where a soft bed, hot shower, and swimming pool await.

Evening briefing (7:00 PM): Your lead guide will sit down with you to review every detail of the coming days. You'll test your gear, ask last-minute questions, and hear the two most important Swahili words you'll need: pole pole (slowly, slowly). Eat a hearty dinner. Hydrate. Sleep well. Tomorrow, the mountain calls.

Tourist tip: Pack your summit-day layers in your daypack now. You won't want to dig through your main bag at 11PM on summit night.

After breakfast, your vehicle climbs through coffee plantations and small villages toward Londorossi Gate. Here, rangers process your park permits while you soak in your first views of Kilimanjaro's peak, still impossibly far above.

The secret advantage of Lemosho? You don't start hiking at the gate. Instead, a 4x4 takes you higher—much higher—to a remote drop-off point on the Shira Plateau. When you step out of the vehicle, you're already above the clouds. The hike to Shira 2 Camp is gentle, almost flat, giving your body its first taste of altitude without exhausting your legs. Dinner is served hot in the mess tent as the sun paints the sky orange. Tonight, the stars will be like nothing you've ever seen.

Tourist tip: Start drinking 4-5 liters of water per day now. Your pee should be pale yellow. Dark urine means altitude sickness is more likely.

This is the most important day of your entire trek—not because it's hard, but because it's clever. You'll hike upward to Lava Tower, a massive volcanic plug jutting from the moorland like a ancient sentinel. At 4,630 meters, you'll feel the thin air. Your head may pound. Your appetite may vanish. That's exactly the point.

You'll spend 60–90 minutes here, eating lunch and forcing down water. Then, you descend to Barranco Camp, dropping nearly 700 meters. This "climb high, sleep low" pattern is the gold standard of altitude acclimatization. Your body will produce extra red blood cells tonight, preparing you for summit day. And the bonus? Barranco Camp sits beneath the famous Barranco Wall, a dramatic cliff you'll climb tomorrow.

Tourist tip: If you feel headache or nausea at Lava Tower, tell your guide immediately. They've seen it hundreds of times and know exactly what to do.

Morning comes with a view. The Barranco Wall rises 300 meters directly above your tent—and you're about to climb it. Good news: it looks far worse than it is. The path zigzags up the face, requiring you to use your hands in a few spots, but it's never truly dangerous. Your guide will show you the best holds. By the top, you'll be grinning with adrenaline.

From there, the trail rolls gently to Karanga Camp. But your day isn't over. After a warm lunch, your guide will lead a short acclimatization hike—gaining about 300 meters toward Barafu Camp, then descending back to Karanga. This extra 90 minutes feels tedious, but it's pure gold for your summit chances. You'll sleep lower, recover fully, and wake up stronger.

Short day. Purposefully short. You'll reach Barafu Summit Camp by early afternoon. The landscape has turned lunar—scree, rocks, no plants, just wind and the massive bulk of Kibo looming above.

Your tent will already be pitched. Sleep immediately. Even if you're not tired, lie down with your eyes closed. At 4:00 PM, your guide will gather everyone for summit briefing: wake up at 11:00 PM, leave by midnight, 6-7 hours up, 3-4 hours down, then a further descent to Millennium Camp. You'll layer your clothes now—thermal base, fleece, insulated jacket, shell. Two gloves. Headlamp with fresh batteries.

Dinner is at 5:00 PM. Eat even if you have no appetite. Force down pasta or porridge. Then try to sleep. You probably won't sleep much. That's normal. Everyone feels the same.

Tourist tip: Tape your toes before bed. The descent will hammer your feet, and prevention is easier than treatment.

Midnight – 3:00 AM: The scree slope to Stella Point is the cruelest section of the entire trek. You take one step forward, slide half a step back. The altitude claws at your lungs. 5:00 – 6:00 AM: You reach Stella Point (5,756m). The horizon turns cobalt, then orange, then gold. Tears freeze on your cheeks. You're not crying from sadness.

6:30 – 7:30 AM: The final push along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. And then—the wooden sign: UHURU PEAK – 5,895m – FREEDOM. Behind you, the glacier gleams. Below you, all of Africa spreads out like a rumpled blanket. You have 10-15 minutes for photos before the wind finds you.

The descent: Three hours back to Barafu. You'll feel euphoric, then nauseous, then utterly drained. At Barafu, you collapse for 60 minutes. Then your guide urges you onward—down to Millennium Camp (3,820m). The lower altitude will save your knees and your recovery.

Tourist tip: At the summit, take photos quickly. The wind chill can drop to -20°C. Then start descending before your fingers go numb.
